"There are available assays for predicting response to cisplatin, 5FU,
Xeloda, Gemzar and Taxanes through Response Genetics in New York using paraffin embedded tissue left over after surgery. These have been validated in lung, colon, rectal, gastric and esophageal cancer, but have been useful in other cancers in my experience."
From one of the well known treating doctors on the ACC list.

this tests the enzyme systems in the tumor, like for microarray tests, not a "growth" or "cell culture" test.

and tests for the following may be useful if the tests come out right:

PDGFR alpha and beta [for GLeevec and LMS]
bcl-2 [there is a gemcitabine+bcl-2 inhibitor trial [genasense] going]
MTAP [for the alanosine trial if the tumor DOESN"T have MTAP}
COX-2 [to see if celebrex or vioxx will help]

Management of LMS is always surgical if possible.
BUT it is nice to have some PARTICULAR ammunition as well.
